Day 13: Change a Little at a Time

Above everything else, you need to limit your focus. This means that you need to cut back on your goals. It’s far too easy to start the new year with your virtual guns blazing. You want to change! You want to be a better person! You’re very excited about everything and are ready to meet those goals now!

Stop.

This enthusiasm is great, but it’s too much. People who are that worked up about meeting their goals will fall short of them. Their excitement will end once things get hard. They’ll give up and those goals will never be met.

Limit Your Goal Setting

It’s time to talk about focus, and why you need to limit your goal setting. This means that you should only focus on changing one or two things about yourself at a time. Why? Because small changes are more likely to take place. If you try to change too much at once, then you’ll fall short of your goals. You’ll feel overwhelmed. Instead, stay small.

Your Focus Matters

Have you ever tried to multi-task? Few people manage to do this successfully. By trying to do two or more things at once, you fail to focus on either one of them. This leads to a number of issues because you make mistakes.

However, if you only focus on one thing at a time, you’ll get that one item done well, and will be able to move on to the next one. This is a more successful way of doing things. It’s also why you need to slow down on the change and choose only one or two goals to focus on. Odds are, you’ll be much more successful this way.

Follow Your Passion

What are you passionate about? Many people are passionate about one thing or another. If you tie your goals to your passion, then you’ll be much more successful. You’ll want to hit those goals. On the other hand, if you choose a goal that you’re not passionate about, then you might not be as enthusiastic about it. You’ll fall short of meeting it for this reason.

What does this have to do with focus? You focus your energies on things that you’re passionate about. Those goals will be more likely to be met.

Don’t Get Overwhelmed

If you’re like most people, you tend to take on too many things at once. You end up with hard deadlines that you have trouble meeting. The same thing is true of your goals. If you have too many of them, then you probably won’t be able to accomplish them all. Instead, keep it small and focus only on one or two goals at a time. In the end, you’ll be much more successful if you’re not overwhelmed with them.

Meet Your Accomplishments

Overall, you’ll see that by limiting your goals, you’re actually able to meet all of them. Those accomplishments will mean much more to you when you see them this way. So, what do you really want to accomplish? What’s your passion? Which goals are you more likely to meet? How can you meet them?

By picking a single goal, you’ll be able to hit it out of the park, so the speak.

In Summary

You need to take the time to focus on each of your goals in order to be successful. Otherwise, you’ll get overwhelmed and may be very tempted to give up. The best thing to do is choose a limited number of goals, and then, when you’ve met them, choose one or two more things to focus on. It’s as easy as that.
